The top-seeded RGV Devils and Harpo's won nailbiters in the semifinals that set up one of the most dramatic finals in Premier Arena Soccer League history.
The RGV Devils looked like they were on cruise control in Saturday's first semifinal when they led the Cincinnati Swerve 6-1 in the second half. Then Cincinnati found a spark getting to 7-4 with 3 minutes remaining before going to the 6th attacker. Then with 32 seconds left Cincinnati scored to make it a 1 goal game at 7-6. Cincinnati fired off four shots in the closing 30 seconds, but RGV managed to hang on for the win.
Harpo's playing division rivals the Colorado Blizzard in the second semifinal found themselves up 4-1 late in the 2nd half. Colorado had brought the score to 4-2, then brought in the 6th attacker with a minute and 30 seconds left on the clock. Colorado scored with 23 seconds remaining to bring the game to 4-3. Fans were lined up 6 deep upstairs and downstairs at Boulder Indoor Soccer pounding on the glass willing the home team to kill off the last 23 seconds. Harpo's blocked several Colorado shots, then missed a 2-on-1 vs the 6th attacker to end the game.
RGV struck twice early in the final to take a 2-0 lead. Harpo's fought back to bring the game even at 2-2. The teams traded goals to bring the halftime score to 3-3. RGV struck first in the second half only to be equalized a minute later bringing the game to 4-4. RGV then scored with five minutes remaining and held a 5-4 lead. With 1:30 remaining Harpo's brought out the 6th attacker. Harpo's relentlessly pressured RGV and with 30 seconds left in the game they scored a nice header over the RGV keeper to equalize and send the game into a shootout. Both keepers came up big in the first round blocking the first shots. RGV scored in the 2nd round and Harpo's was blocked again. Then with the game on the line Harpo's keeper makes a big save to breathe life into their hopes. Harpo's then scored sending the shootout to sudden death. Both teams scored in round 4. Then RGV scored in round 5 and Harpo's missed their shot wide giving the RGV Devils the Championship.
