Santa Clara’s mens team made the final stopping Southern Colorado 7-6 in the semi-final. The Pumas defeated Chico 6-1 in their semi-final match. Southern Colorado had 3-1 and 5-3 leads against Santa Clara, but could not close it out. The Pumas led Chico 1-0 at the half of their semi-final.
Santa Clara rallied to defeat the Cougars 8-6 in the the championship. The Cougars held a 3-1 advantage with just a few minutes left in the half, when Adriano Toni scored two goals to tie the score at 3-3 going into the half. Toni remained hot starting the second half with a goal, and an assist on a goal by Jose Bernabe. Bernie Lilavois and Majell Aterado each had a pair of goals for the Pumas, but it was not enough to catch the highest scoring team in the league. Toni’s efforts paid off with the Finals MVP Award. It was Santa Clara’s first summer championship victory since 1999.
In the Women’s Final Santa Clara women led Chico 6-3 in the 4th quarter. Chico playing without its two leading scorers, due to injuries in the game, came back to make it 6-5. Santa Clara scored to make it 7-5. Chico then pulled the goalie for the 6th attacker, and Santa Clara capitalized getting two more goals to end the game 9-5 and to cap a PASL-Premier sweep of the Men’s and Women’s Summer championship.
