Fort Collins and Northern Colorado to Battle for Rocky Mountain Division Championship
2/22/09 - The first game of the Rocky Mountain Division semifinals featured the 6-2 Ft. Collins Fury and the 5-3 Golden Strikers. The game at Ft. Collins Indoor Soccer Center went down to the wire. The Fury sustained the lead throughout the game only to see the Strikers make a last quarter run that almost put the game into overtime. Ft. Collins held on in the last minute to win 6-5.
Across town at 4:30 pm, the 5-3 Northern Colorado Cutthroats played 7-1 Denver Dragons at Arena Sports in an exciting overtime match.
Denver was in the lead for much of the see saw match when the Cutthroats came from a 7-5 deficit with two minutes left in regular time to tie it up 7-7 with four seconds on the clock. The overtime match went six minutes until an incredible ball delivered from 60 feet down field found a Cutthroat player in front of the Dragons keeper who put in a game winning header giving the Cutthroats an 8-7 win. Denver started the year 7-0, but lost their last two games and lost out on qualifying for the national tournament.
Ft. Collins and Northern Colorado now face off on March 1 for the chance to advance to the National Championship Tournament March 6-7 in Las Vegas.
