Versatility Has San Diego Fusion in First Place

6/15/09 - San Diego, Calif. -- In the San Diego Fusion's first four matches of 2009, head coach Salvagio has used four different starting lineups. Whether because of injury or other reasons, the Red-and-White have had a different look every time they've played.

The rotating lineup doesn't seem to have hampered San Diego's success, as the team currently sits in first place in PASL-Premier Southwest Division.

"Using different lineups can be hard," said midfielder Miguel Luna. "As you play with each other more and more, you start learning people's tendencies and every time the lineup changes, you have to adapt pretty quickly.

"But I think we've done a good job with it. We're getting the results, so something's going right."

Much of the success of the Fusion rests in the players' ability to perform well in more than one spot on the field, or to even learn a new position entirely.

"When I came here, I knew I was going to be used in different positions," said Anthony Medina. "I'm used to it. Wherever the coach wants me to play, I'll play. It's not really too much of a challenge to switch positions."

Medina is truly versatile. He has played both midfield and forward this season and has scored goals at each position.

The Red-and-White defensive corps is full of players that are able to quickly adapt to new positions.

Brian O’Connor had spent much of his career in the midfield before coming to the Fusion a few years back where he was converted to a defender. His role has been to add speed to the defense this season and to partner with his twin brother Erin in the back.

"It's a role that I've been familiar with playing," said Brian of the shift. "Salvagio knew that I could play there and decided to plug me in. Right now, it's looking pretty good."

"My natural position is right midfielder," he said. "Defending in the PASL is completely different, so I've had to change my style. But I'm becoming a better player. I am getting stronger and faster to adapt to this league."

While many of the players admit that the frequently changing lineups can present a challenge, they are always confident in whoever is in the game.

"The guys believe in each other and Salvagio instilled that in us," said Luna. "It doesn't matter who's on the field or what position they're in, guys are going to go out there and do what they're supposed to do."

San Diego will play at the Las Vegas Knights this weekend and, will likely use yet another lineup as they look to continue their strong start to the season.
