7/24/09 - The Premier Arena Soccer League (PASL-Premier) will commence its 12th Summer League postseason tournament on Saturday and will crown a champion Sunday. The Women’s bracket will also be interspersed throughout the schedule and both tournaments will be played in their entirety at Estadio Azteca Sports Arena in Sacramento.
Seven men’s teams and four women’s teams will comprise the respective brackets. Both brackets will be headlined by Santa Clara (Off The Wall Soccer Santa Clara), whose men’s (6-2, second place) and women’s (6-1-1, first place) teams are the returning champions.
The host teams, Estadio Azteca All-Stars men (6-2, first place) and women (6-2, second place) matched the Santa Clara teams almost goal for goal, except the Azteca women suffered their only two losses of the season to Santa Clara.
The PASL-Premier Summer League is similar to baseball’s Winter Leagues where you have a mix of minor league players continuing their development and professional players getting work in and playing for pride before their hometown fans.
From the Pacific Division, Santa Clara is led by former MISL Rookie of the Year and current Mexican National Futbol Rapido Team forward Vicente Figueroa, and USNAST players Nelson Santana and Jesus Molina. The Estadio Azteca All-Stars feature the USNAST’s Antonio Sutton and his Stockton Cougars teammates Leone, Pedro Lupercio, and Hugo Brambila.
The Turlock Express (4-2-2) are led by the Cougars Uriel Robledo and USNAST forward Aaron Susi. The Sacramento Scorpions are led by former Knights 2000 WISL Rookie of the Year Jorge Fernandez and Eric Harvey.
And in the Southwest Division, LMFR Baja Division Champion La Cabana (7-1) led by MNFR Teamers Eduardo Velez and Edgar Rivas, beat out the San Diego Fusion (6-2) and first-year Sequoia FC (6-2), who won their last five games including a 6-5 upset of the Fusion. The Fusion roster has several players who will take the field for the expansion San Diego Sockers when the PASL-Pro season starts in November.
The Fusion and Scorpions open the tournament at 9:00am Saturday. The first women’s game is at 10:30am. The women’s final will be Sunday at noon, followed by the men’s final at 1:00pm. For directions and ticket information go to http://www.estadioaztecasportsarena.com/.
