Ft. Collins Fury, Denver Sizzle Take Men's, Women's Titles
8/1/10 - The teams and schedules were finalized for the 13th Premier Arena Soccer League Summer National Championships in both the men’s and women’s leagues.
The action commenced with a women’s qualifying game at 11:15am on Saturday, July 31 and concluded at 3:00pm on Sunday with the men’s final.
Five men’s teams and five women’s teams competed to take home the summer season prize. The Colorado Springs Blizzard and Turlock Express won their respective divisions and the Denver Sizzle and Soccer World FC won the women’s divisions.
Neither one of last year’s champions qualified for this year’s tournaments meaning both titles would change hands.
Colorado Springs, under head coach John Wells, got off to a slow 1-2 start before reeling off five straight wins including home-and-home victories over the then-6-0 Ft. Collins Fury.
The Blizzard roster is dotted with former Denver Dynamite players like Jimmy Wade, John Molet, Kelly Robinson, and Jesse Black.
CF Revolucion Tijuana, the developmental team of new PASL-Pro team Revolucion Tijuana, was granted an international at-large bid and has spent the summer playing exhibitions and training regularly.
The Denver Sizzle’s only blemish was a 4-4 tie against the Ft. Collins Lady Fury on June 26. They won their other seven games by an average of over seven goals per game, including a 9-4 win over the Lady Fury on June 27.
The teams both advanced to the championship for a keenly anticipated rematch. This time the Fury legged out a 3-1 victory for their first PASL-Premier championship. The Blizzard had a clean sheet in the tournament until the final, going 3-0 including two wins over CF Revolucion Tijuana. The Fury didn't lose any games, but had a perfect tournament marred by a 2-2 tie against the Turlock Express.
On the women's side the favored Denver Sizzle didn't disappoint, taking the women's championship 2-1 over OTW Santa Clara.
