4/25/09 - The Mockingbird All-Stars made an auspicious home debut in the return of indoor soccer to Louisville, edging PASL-Pro North American Finalist 1790 Cincinnati, 6-5 in shootouts.
The game was a test match that could lead to the permanent return of indoor soccer. "I think the game went really well," said Vijay Dias, one of the organizers, who also played in the game. "The crowd was going crazy in the end and it was a great atmosphere."
Dias went from goat to hero. He committed a turnover in his own end that allowed Cincinnati to tie the game at 5-5 with 40 seconds remaining in regulation. After a scoreless five minute overtime, however, his shootout goal proved to be the winning margin as Mockingbird outscored 1790 2-1 in the shootouts.
Lindsey Smith (Javanon), Justin Prather (University of Louisville), Toby Wilcox (coach at Christian Academy), Aaron Klapham (New Zealand, University of Louisville), and Jon Jonkey (University of Louisville) scored for Louisville, who led 4-1 at halftime and let a 5-3 lead slip away in the fourth quarter.
Ty Wilcox (University of Louisville, Javanon) was the winning goalkeeper for Mockingbird.
The game was organized by The Estopinal Group, who will soon make a final decision on whether or not to join the Professional Arena Soccer League (PASL-Pro) in time for the 2009/10 season.
