LAS VEGAS, NV May 18, 2008 - Commissioner Kevin Milliken rose to his feet and declared, "It’s official. We have a league!" With that the conference room at the Orleans Arena broke into applause and the first Annual General Meeting of the Professional Arena Soccer League (PASL-Pro) was underway.
Milliken has been the commissioner of the Premier Arena Soccer League (PASL) for the last 10 years and the rapid growth of the PASL dictated a natural progression into professional arena soccer.
PASL-Pro heard presentations from Kent Gold of SoccerTots, Sergio Del Rio of Liga Mexicana and Sporturf International, and Mel Kowalchuk from the Canadian Major Indoor Soccer League.
PASL-Pro announced its inaugural regular season would consist of a 16 game schedule (8 home, 8 away) commencing on October 25 with a Championship Weekend taking place in Stockton, CA on March 13-15, 2009.
Each PASL-Pro team will be required to field an amateur team in PASL-Premier, which is its official development league.
Significant rule changes were highlighted. Both PASL-Pro and PASL-Premier will adopt the traditional single point scoring in which all goals are valued equally. PASL-Pro teams may register up to 15 players on their rosters and are required to dress 13 players for each game. The three-line violation will only apply to goalkeepers and goalkeepers do not have to serve their own penalties. The Pro League will adopt the Premier League’s no slide tackling and if a team commits 6 fouls in a half it will result in a two-minute penalty.
PASL-Pro also announced the formation of the US National Arena Soccer Team and tryouts were held earlier in the day at Las Vegas Indoor Soccer. Bernie Lilavois was named Head Coach of the US Team that will head to Montreal, Canada for the Circuito Mundial Futbol Rapido tournament that will be held from June 29 to July 2. Canada, Mexico, and Brazil will also be represented.
The owners ratified the By Laws and adjourned until the next meeting, which is scheduled for June 18.
PASL-Pro previously announced the Stockton Cougars, who played the last three years as the California Cougars in the Major Indoor Soccer League as its first team. It also announced the Wenatchee Fire as the first anchor tenant in the new 4,300 seat Greater Wenatchee Regional Events Center. PASL-Pro expects to have as many as 16 teams for the inaugural season. The final list of teams, the 2008-09 schedule, and playoff format will be released following the June 18th meeting.
PASL-Pro is a new professional arena soccer league whose inaugural season kicks off October 25, 2008. PASL-Premier just completed its 10th season as the nation’s top amateur arena soccer league.
